Computer Telephony without Telephony Boards
Zagreb, Croatia June 15, 2004 -- For the last two decades computer telephony was telephony boards based business. It is the time for changes, or at least that is what folks at Uniqall do think about it. Few days ago Uniqall made available for free download the first public beta of its flagship Gridborg 1.0 software that is supposed to displace expensive telephony boards from theirs well entrenched positions within computer telephony solutions.
All since first telephony board was introduced two decades ago, such boards were handling connection to telephone network and media processing tasks. However, mighty combination of VoIP & Moore's law is threatening to turn entire industry up side down. With VoIP growing at present rates computer telephony applications do not need to be attached directly to circuit switched networks. Actually, if the application needs to be future proof, IP network is the right place to be. On other hand, Moore's law made x86 processors powerful more then enough for the purpose of handling media processing tasks that were previously handled by dedicated digital signal processors embedded within telephony boards.
By solving both network connectivity and media processing in software, Uniqall with Gridborg enables computer telephony application developers to use any 'of the shelf' VoIP media gateway instead of expensive telephony boards. Depending of the size of installation, price difference may even be in tens of thousands of dollars.
Although the most of major telephony board vendors more or less acknowledged this trend by announcing its own host media processing building blocks, they seem to be a bit slow in putting actual products on the market. It is understandable when considered that software only solutions will eat directly into their established telephony boards businesses. The quickest among them is not surprisingly Intel who as x86 processor vendor has the least to loose in such transition.
Traditionally, telephony boards were priced in accordance with the number of concurrent calls that they are able to handle (ports) and the number of concurrent voice or conferencing resources (resources) that they can provide to those calls. While perfectly logical in telephony boards business, ports & resources pricing for software only solutions has no sense, other than protecting existing hardware based revenues. Per processor, all you can eat pricing, is just much more appropriate. As the only vendor with no hardware based revenues to loose, Uniqall is in the best position to capitalize on this transition.
'Both VoIP and Moore's law changed many industries. Telephony boards business is in collision course with both trends,' said Boris Pavacic, CTO of Uniqall, Inc. 'It is going to be very exciting to participate in what is going to happen with this industry during next few years.'
Gridborg 1.0 works with industry leading Envox development toolkit, with support for other application interfaces to follow in subsequent minor releases. Gridborg server is available for Windows and several Linux distributions, while Gridborg Envox driver like Envox works only on Windows.
